English for Job Interviews: A CI Guide

Job interview English requires B1-B2 fluency + professional register. Build with CI first, then add 10-15 min/day output practice from B1.

Minimum English level for job interviews

For international company interviews: B2 is the functional minimum. B1 is possible for non-English-speaking countries where the interviewer is also a non-native speaker. Build CI base to B1 before investing in interview-specific preparation.

Professional register through CI

Professional English register (formal vocabulary, polished phrases, diplomatic phrasing) is acquired through CI from: business podcasts, TED Talks, professional YouTube channels, earnings calls, conference recordings. Build 50+ hours of professional CI before interview prep.

Common interview questions: CI preparation

"Tell me about yourself", "Why do you want this job?", "What are your strengths/weaknesses?", "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" β€” these require spontaneous production. B1 CI base makes production possible; 10+ hours of output practice builds interview readiness.

Interview preparation timeline

Month 1-3 (if at B1): 30 min/day CI (professional content). Month 2: 10 min/day self-recording standard questions. Month 3: 2-3 mock interviews with tutor or exchange partner. Week before interview: 5 times review of your STAR stories.

Common questions
Do I need to understand every word?

No. If you follow the overall meaning β€” roughly 70–90% β€” the video is working. Missing some words is normal and your brain fills the gaps from context.

How long until I can speak?

Speaking emerges naturally once you have enough input β€” often after a silent period of months. Forcing speech too early mostly produces translation and stress. Let understanding lead.

Should I use subtitles?

Use English subtitles as a bridge, then rewatch without them. Avoid subtitles in your own language β€” they let your brain skip the listening and slow acquisition.

How much should I watch per day?

Consistency beats marathons. Even 15–30 focused minutes daily adds up to 90–180 hours a year β€” enough to cross a CEFR level. A habit you keep beats an ambitious plan you drop.
