How to Watch Netflix in English: CI Guide

Netflix CI method: TL subtitles from B1, no subtitles from B2. Language Reactor, rewatch strategy, genre selection by level.

Netflix as CI: the rules

Netflix CI works when: (1) subtitles are TL-only (not L1), (2) content is at your level +1 (60-80% comprehension without subs), (3) you watch for enjoyment not translation. L1 subtitles are not CI.

Language Reactor extension

Language Reactor: shows two subtitle tracks simultaneously, click-to-translate, sentence mining to Anki. Use TL + TL, not L1 + TL. Free tier available.

Rewatch strategy

Watch ep. 1 with TL subs. Rewatch ep. 1 without subs. Continue series without subs. Familiarity with characters/accents makes subsequent episodes easier.

Netflix CI by level

A0-A1: avoid Netflix (speed too high). A2: with L1 subs + Language Reactor. B1: TL-only subs. B2: no subs on familiar content. C1+: no subs, full speed. Never use L1 subtitles above A2.

Common questions
Do I need to understand every word?

No. If you follow the overall meaning β€” roughly 70–90% β€” the video is working. Missing some words is normal and your brain fills the gaps from context.

How long until I can speak?

Speaking emerges naturally once you have enough input β€” often after a silent period of months. Forcing speech too early mostly produces translation and stress. Let understanding lead.

Should I use subtitles?

Use English subtitles as a bridge, then rewatch without them. Avoid subtitles in your own language β€” they let your brain skip the listening and slow acquisition.

How much should I watch per day?

Consistency beats marathons. Even 15–30 focused minutes daily adds up to 90–180 hours a year β€” enough to cross a CEFR level. A habit you keep beats an ambitious plan you drop.
