How to Maintain Your English Level: CI Guide
Maintenance CI: 15-20 min/day of enjoyable TL content. B2+ is self-sustaining with English media. Regression rare above B2.
When regression happens
Most likely: A1-A2 without maintenance (3-6 months). Rare above B1. B2-C1 without English for 1-2 years: productive skills degrade; receptive skills very stable. High-frequency vocab (top 3,000) is not lost.
Maintenance CI by level
A1-A2: 30 min/day (active CI). B1: 20 min/day. B2+: 15 min/day of enjoyable content β Netflix, podcasts, YouTube. At B2+, natural media consumption provides sufficient maintenance.

B2+ is self-sustaining
At B2+, any English media maintains the level: YouTube, Netflix, podcasts, news, work. 15 min/day of English entertainment maintains B2+ indefinitely.

Re-activating after a break
After 6-12 months without CI: productive skills degrade faster. Reactivation: 2-4 weeks of intensive CI (45 min/day) + output. Most B2 learners return to B2 within 2-4 weeks.
English as a lifestyle at C1-C2
C1-C2 learners switch all media to English. Maintaining English = using it for daily life. The distinction between "studying" and "enjoying" disappears entirely.
1How much everyday English speech can you follow?
2Can you watch a show with English subtitles?
3How comfortable is a real conversation?
Suggested starting level:
Do I need to understand every word?
No. If you follow the overall meaning β roughly 70β90% β the video is working. Missing some words is normal and your brain fills the gaps from context.
How long until I can speak?
Speaking emerges naturally once you have enough input β often after a silent period of months. Forcing speech too early mostly produces translation and stress. Let understanding lead.
Should I use subtitles?
Use English subtitles as a bridge, then rewatch without them. Avoid subtitles in your own language β they let your brain skip the listening and slow acquisition.
How much should I watch per day?
Consistency beats marathons. Even 15β30 focused minutes daily adds up to 90β180 hours a year β enough to cross a CEFR level. A habit you keep beats an ambitious plan you drop.
